It’s a privilege to have Lake Merritt right minutes away from downtown Oakland, serving as a refuge for wildlife and people. Throughout the year I’ll see different birds come by, some local and others having traveled far distances.
Marshes, salt ponds, and mudflaps–a great combination for a hike and bird watching. Alviso Marina County Park is on the edge of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. With good visibility, you can see clear across the bay.
Close to downtown Oakland is Lake Merritt, a mini refuge for people and birds. It offers a three-mile trail around a v-shaped lagoon.
