Close to downtown Oakland is Lake Merritt, a mini refuge for people and birds. It offers a three-mile trail around a v-shaped lagoon.
The lake attracts quite a number of waterfowl and has a nature center that can aid in rehabilitation for injured birds. It makes for easy viewing of some incredible birds.

Bird Facts: True to their name, Night-Herons are mostly inactive during the day, spending most of the time perched in trees until evening.
