I finally got some clear photos of Buffleheads at Baylands Regional Park, which offers visiting birds ample wetlands for hanging out and foraging.
It’s a privilege to have Lake Merritt right minutes away from downtown Oakland, serving as a refuge for wildlife and people. Throughout the year I’ll see different birds come by, some local and others having traveled far distances.
A friend from school shared a favorite photo spot for views of the Golden Gate Bridge at Marshall Beach. We timed dinner and our arrival with “golden hour”, leading to some amazing vistas of the bridge.
It’s been a few years intermittently working on Project 200 Birds and I have yet to get my timing for nesting season down.
Lake Anza is located almost 800 feet above sea level in Tilden Regional Park. The Lake was constructed 80+ years ago for recreation and for providing water to a nearby golf course.
The Monterey Bay is always filled with wildlife with extensive kelp forests in the ocean and rolling hills along the coast. I’ve been to Monterey countless times, but each visit always has a surprise or something new.
The Marin Art & Garden Center is an expansive set of gardens and spaces. It’s free to the public and it’s beautifully maintained by resident groups and volunteers.
Marshes, salt ponds, and mudflaps–a great combination for a hike and bird watching. Alviso Marina County Park is on the edge of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. With good visibility, you can see clear across the bay.
I visited the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, by Fremont California. The refuge is 30,000 acres of protected habitat for local and migratory wildlife.
Close to Sacramento lies the Yolo Bypass, one of two areas built to protect Sacramento from floods. One part of the bypass is designated a wildlife area, which has vegetation that is compatible with the flooding function.
It’s my second year seeing nesting season out in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s certainly an amazing area to see the large number of bird species and how they live throughout the year.
My quest to take photos of different bird species in Northern California has led me to acquire a lot of heavy and expensive equipment.
