Lake Anza is located almost 800 feet above sea level in Tilden Regional Park. The Lake was constructed 80+ years ago for recreation and for providing water to a nearby golf course.
Today, it can still be used for swimming for half of the year, and a rolling 1.3 mile trail surrounds the lake and connects to trails across the 2,079 acre park. Our visit was late in the afternoon and we saw a few waterfowl enjoying the lake too, often diving down for food.

After leaving the park, we saw a gorgeous sunset from the Berkeley Hills across San Francisco and the Bay, with colors lingering as they deepened. I didn’t have the right camera gear for this picture, but it is one that I’ll need to try again.
Bird Facts: The Bufflehead’s common and scientific names come from their bulbous-shaped heads. The common name is a combination of buffalo and head.
