Bird Blitz in the Park

It’s spring and there is plenty of light to walk across Golden Gate Park in search of birds.

I saw a great mix of adult and juvenile birds, all enjoying the natural surroundings.  Many birds use Stow Lake as a rest stop during long migrations.

Pygmy nuthatches live in pine forests, often in large family groups.  They are highly social and are very animated while looking for insects and seeds.

Stow Lake, the largest body of water in the park had an assortment of birds, big and small.  A pair of Muscovy ducks are not normal to the area and are native to South and Central America.

Bird Facts: Swallows are very fast and agile fliers. When hunting, they’ll typically fly close to the water catching insects in mid-air. When building or placing a swallow nest box, consult a good guide since an improper nest could put swallows and their young at risk from predators.
