Point Reyes National Seashore has an incredible amount of natural species diversity. Over 45% of North American avian species and nearly 18% of California’s plant species are found in the park (source: National Park Service).
The park has an incredible 150 miles of hiking trails, which span across coastlines, wetlands, and rocky ridge-lines. Plan your visit by picking an area of the park that you’d spend a day before arriving. If spending a weekend hiking, there is a hostel in the area, a camp ground, as well as hotels outside of the park. In our visit, we witnessed a feeding frenzy in Drakes Bay. Not sure whether it might have been anchovies or sardines, but a large number of birds were there to feast.

Bird Facts: Vultures aren’t exactly the prettiest birds around, but they are fascinating in how they survive and in their role in the ecosystem. Vultures are one of few birds that have strong senses of smell, which they use to find food. Vultures use rising thermal air to gain altitude and stay afloat, soaring for long lengths of time and preserving their energy.
