Aloha! Day 2 in Kauai

The second full day in Kauai started on the north side of the island at the Kilauea Lighthouse where colonies of Red-footed Boobies were super active in building nests.

One pair displayed signs of courtship–impressed?

While most of the birds active in the area were Red-footed Boobies, we spotted a Great Frigatebird and White-tailed Tropicbirds in the far distance. Thankfully their distinctive tails helped us spot and recognize them.

Bird Facts: Great Frigatebirds have incredible ranges and can stay in the air for weeks at a time. How? One of their uncovered secrets is sleeping while flying.

After a quick lunch, we then made our way to Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge for a mountain hike.

What better way to end the day than a picnic on the beach and watching the sun set?
