Hummingbirds at Ardenwood

Ardenwood Historic Farm is a family friendly farm with educational activities from around 1890-1930. Want to watch a blacksmith make tools? Or ride a heritage train that’s maintained by volunteers? What I didn’t expect was a gaggle of photographers with giant cameras by a patch of flowers.

Turns out, the photographers weren’t the only ones hovering over the patch. The flowers were a prime location for local Anna’s Hummingbirds and migratory Allen’s Hummingbirds, which travel to and from Mexico each year. According to the Ardenwood’s Bird Guide, Allen’s Hummingbirds visit between April and July.

Note the Allen’s Hummingbird in flight showing its tail feathers, to chase out another hummingbird. Too fast for me this afternoon.
