A friend suggested walking around Lake Merritt, a first in a long time for me since the pandemic started. Lake Merritt became immensely popular and sometimes crowded, but it was a great refuge for so many wishing for open air and socializing.

A nice comparison of how much iridescent colors in birds can go from dashingly rainbow-like to flat black. The color is most often visible when head-on, but disappears when viewing from the side. Researchers continue to uncover more about how their feathers shimmer so brightly.
Canvasback ducks, perhaps a first for me. The contrast between their heads and bodies was quite dramatic, along with their long sloping bills.
The Rotary Nature Center, the first wildlife refuge in North America, frequently has different birds visiting. Sometimes they are wild and stopping by for a respite, and others are domesticated like the Chinese Goose.
